OMB Remulla meets Filipinos in Washington, DC; highlights institutional reforms and accountable governance
WASHINGTON, DC — Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla met with members of the Filipino community and officials of the Philippine Embassy in Washington, DC on 22 June 2026 as part of his official mission to strengthen partnerships and advance the country’s commitment to integrity, accountability, and good governance.
During the engagement, OMB Remulla shared ongoing reforms in the Office of the Ombudsman anchored on strengthening public trust, enhancing institutional effectiveness, and ensuring that accountability mechanisms respond to the needs of the Filipino people — wherever they may be.
“We must be the gold standard for governance and progressiveness. This way, we can respond faster and better.” Remulla said.
OMB Remulla emphasized that the fight against corruption is a shared responsibility that extends beyond government institutions, recognizing the vital role of overseas Filipinos as partners in promoting transparency, integrity, and responsible public service.
“Tell us what you think. Share your expertise. We need all the help we can get as this is a big task ahead of us – but one we can accomplish together,” Remulla urged the Filipino community in DC.
The Ombudsman also highlighted the Office’s continuing efforts toward digital transformation, institutional reforms, stronger international cooperation, and more accessible public services consistent with the principles of Sustainable Development Goal 16.
The dialogue with the Filipino community reaffirmed the importance of collaboration among government, civil society, and citizens in building institutions that are not only accountable, but also inclusive, responsive, and worthy of public confidence.
“We are here to make sure the US is no longer a safe haven for ill-gotten wealth from the Philippines. We will do what we can to recover all that has been hidden here in the US.” Remulla said.
The townhall meeting followed the Ombudsman’s participation at the 7th Global Conference on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where he joined global leaders in discussions on peace, justice, effective institutions, and the transformative impact of SDG 16.#
